THE FUTURE OF FOSTER YOUTH

There are over 390,000 children in foster care each year.  And, each year at least 250,000 children continually enter the foster care system across the nation, of those at least 20,000 youths age out of foster care at 18 years old.  Unfortunately, the future of the newly emancipated foster youth can be grim, as they will more likely face homelessness and prison when compared to their peers.

In Sacramento:

More than half will not graduate from high school

Half will become homeless

Less than 1 out of 5 will gain employment, of those 90% will fall below the poverty line

1 out of 4 will become incarcerated at some point after they leave foster care
