“If you have tens of millions of people not living up to their potential as economic beings, by definition your society is going to be less productive than it could be” Robert Kuttner
_Conclusion
_Our current policies for dealing with hp and h all act in the same basic fashion. In almost all cases, all that is required of a recipient of services is to fill out some paperwork and then hold their hands out to receive whatever has been taken from their working brethren. We have taken the worst and already proven failed parts of communism and used it as a model to establish a system of programs to end hp and h. All systems and programs that have taken from the productive to give to the unproductive with no end in sight have always over time failed. Its success is impossible, it goes against all rational of how to accomplish success and instead follows every path to failure. It’s as if these programs were setup with the intention of failing as they work against productivity, morality, justice and logic. It amounts to theft, hardworking people are having the fruits of their labor stolen from them while people with no other options are being robbed of their dignity. Almost all of America fits into one group or the other and both are being victimized by policies that have failed with no chance of success.
Forcing one part of society to work and provide for the needs of others through taxes on their labor is not shackled slavery but it is most certainly forced labor which does not benefit the worker. Others who wish to provide for themselves but due to a lack of options are reduced to begging - be it on the streets or request to government programs. This is an intolerable situation for both sides which must be corrected.
Over 60 million Americans are now dependant on the government for their needs of food, money and shelter(#27R). The lack of these needs and demands on the government are terribly draining to everyone, from the person suffering from the lack of need(s) to the person working who puts so much money into systems that are miserable failures.
To make matters worse, a person cannot be free if they own nothing, they will always be dependant upon others to provide them with their needs. For those who want to work, our current system is extremely demoralizing and unproductive - they want nothing more than the ability to work and provide for themselves and their families but instead of workers they’re forced to be beggars. When you take away ones freedom, dignity and ability to provide for themselves and their families and in turn give them everything they need they can become totally dependant and lose the ability, determination and knowledge of how to provide for themselves. This is proven when animals are taken from the wild and raised in captivity and can be undone by giving people the means to care for themselves, in a figure of speech we need to teach people to fish instead of bringing them fish daily.
Our current resources, policies and programs in the way they are currently used come nowhere near matching the existing need. Though without them things would most certainly be worse and for that we should be grateful. But having perfectly good people and talent go to waste and suffer when the only thing they require is access to work is unacceptable and too easy to fix to be left as is.
Eden is an ambitious plan that may be a little too much for some to accept. If you have any knowledge or opinions that could help bring an end to hp or h, I beg of you, contact myself or anyone else who is in a position to help. It is our duty to share information that could help end so much pain. Regardless of my thoughts on how successful Eden could be, it will be quickly scrapped if a better plan were to come to light. Apart from Eden other ideas could include requiring a certain amount of volunteer hours from recipients of government aid. If people prove themselves unable to get off of government assistance, then the Eden plan could be revisited as a potential solution.
Another step could involve setting a day to be observed each year that we as a society could more thoroughly and thoughtfully acknowledge hp and h and all its effects. Putting forth a greater effort to ending these problems should be of great national concern especially considering all the costs, illness and death associated with them. Progress could also be made in helping the mentally disabled find jobs. As some people lack the mental ability to acquire skills and jobs to feed and shelter themselves it should be one of our goals to give work to them so they can secure their needs. We don’t expect children to care for themselves because of their mental age and we shouldn’t expect adults with the mental age of children to waste away just because their bodies are a certain age.
Eden’s concept was designed not just for those in need but with the will of the people in mind. As 2/3 of Americans say it is the responsibility of the government to take care of people who can’t care for themselves, 65% believe the government should guarantee every citizen enough to eat and a place to sleep and 71% think that poor people have become too dependant on government assistance (#41R). Eden has the ability to care for the helpless, guarantee everyone food and shelter all while making people independent and reducing the burdens that have been placed on the working class.
As a society we attempt to give people what they need when they need it with the intent of discontinuing services when the person or family becomes more stable. This leaves people in the same situations as they were just prior to becoming hp or h. To a great extent we ignore the causes of hp and h and the end result is we will always have a steady stream of people in need. In the sea of life, these people have fallen overboard and were given life preserves until they made it back on the edge of an overcrowded boat. They are still close to the edge and have every bit of potential to fall back in as they did the 1st time. Eden will change this, it will create enough boats for everyone who wants to be above water instead of neck deep in it. Eden will address both causes and effects at the same time and its successes will lie in ending current suffering while at the same time making it impossible for an individual willing to work to fall into hp or h. Involuntary suffering can, will and must be ended. As soon as the 1st program proves successful this will flatten hp and h like a big, beautiful game of dominoes.
A lot of people don’t seek government assistance because it’s embarrassing and demoralizing to receive help in the way our programs are currently setup. Eden will be the opposite in every respect, it will end policies that allow people to sit idle and call for a check at the end of the week, it will be a powerful source of motivation and ambition.
Eden will cost less than half of what is now being spent and has the potential to reduce costs to zero. At a time when so called non-for-profits “lose” money while having people on their staff and board earning six figures and $11 trillion can be committed to a bailout of the economy (#42R), Eden should be seen as practical and logical. If we can plan to spend $35,628.05 per person (#44A) to bailout the economy to ensure businesses don’t fail and people don’t go hp and h then we should certainly be willing to try a new idea that could greatly reduce costs and end the hp and h that already actually exists. How could we justify spending so much on keeping a worst case scenario from happening but not spend so little to undo the worst case after it happens?
It has been proven that it saves money to solve these problems rather than continue to act as we do and a majority of us want these problems to end. Our current policies cost more and do less good than the actual solution. Imagine your most dearest loved ones with little or no access to food, shelter and money - such a lack thereof that it was killing them. Now picture the way to solve this problem is to try a new plan of support for them that will cost you half as much as you are spending now, make them independent and actually solve the problem. What are we waiting for?
People are suffering and having their lives cut way too short. If they were given something, any task to do in return for their needs they would do it, if not it would most likely be due to a mental disability that keeps them from caring for themselves or a mental crutch created by our current programs. In these cases they need counseling to help correct the problem.
Society’s willingness to fund and subsidize the poor will be one of Eden’s greatest obstacles. There will be plenty of people who will want to leave things the way they are and have others provide for them the rest of their lives. Much like the biggest way to help an addict sober up these people will require “tough love” in the form of removing available services to them until they are willing to work. As long as we continue to enable laziness through giving, it will always be a problem. It will be the day when someone refuses or leaves their property, work, food and independence gained in Eden to return to hp or h and begging that we will know who is truly lazy and in it for the free ride. This leads to the thought that a government check should be in place between a person leaving Eden and receiving government assistance to screen people to ensure that if they are to receive benefits that there is a better reason than described above or else they should be denied such benefits.
There need be no handouts, almost everyone can do something productive, even the mentally and physically disabled. Eden can make it so that if one is to be hp or h it would only be a result of their laziness. If we can get to this point we would need to start scaling back and ending the programs that enable laziness like food pantries, food stamps, welfare, etc. and instead get people the mental help they need to get them to care for themselves. But until then, many of our brothers and sisters are suffering greatly through no fault of their own and all they require is an opportunity to care for themselves and it should be one our highest priorities to give them that opportunity.
There will be those who say - you can’t force someone to work, that’s slavery. I most certainly would have to agree and that is exactly why we need these opportunities for the less fortunate. We currently force those with jobs to work to support those without and it is far worse to force one to work to support another than to force one to work to support themselves.
Where other programs have failed Eden will succeed because it will be made up of the former hp and h and returning to that life will be the only alternative to the food, shelter and independence they’ve created through Eden. History has proven over and over again that anything is possible with the right motivation. The desire to defeat evil led many in the Russian army to sit in the trenches clapping their hands to imitate gunfire because they did not have enough guns to fight the Nazis. The desire to earn a paycheck led many to dig the Panama Canal despite the high death rate among the workers there. There are countless examples like these that show what people are capable of when motivated and the desire to secure ones needs and future should prove to be more than enough motivation to make Eden successful.
Eden has more potential for success than anything that has ever been attempted to alleviate hp and h. It could even provide volunteers and donors with an estimate of how many years were added to peoples lives and even how many lives their actions have saved. This can be calculated as soon as we have figures on the costs and labor hours necessary to establish each client. It would be a measure of how great a hero a person is. A lot of heroes become so by being in the right place at the right time and acting as needed. Eden will allow people to save lives, become heroes and give people bragging rights as to how many they have helped and saved. Imagine the nonsense that small talk can be - the latest tv garbage or the weather and replace it with discussions about how many lives you saved over the weekend. What could be more patriotic than spending spare time and money to save the lives of our fellow countrymen and women?
Hp and h must be stopped. They are too expensive in terms of health, money and morality to allow them to go on any further. They are diseases and we have the cure. Eden can change the world, it can end suffering and all the costs that come with it. Its potential to help those in need is limitless. We can all benefit from Eden whether or not we participate in it. We can all save lives and become heroes and it can be as simple as watching tv.
